Former Mayor Alvin Kushner passed away Tuesday at the age of 82. I know his family are avid readers of RTCP and our thoughts are with them. Mr Kushner was working hard to make College Park a great town long before blogs even existed. More details in this Gazette article

Kushner is survived by his wife, Gail, and three daughters, Debbie, Jane and Jennifer.

AL AND I WERE BOTH ANTAGONISTS AND FRIENDS. ETHEL AND I JUST LEARNED OS AL’S PASSING TODAY, OCT 28, 2009, AS WE WERE OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND COLLEGE PARK SINCE MID SEPTEMBER. AL’S DEDICATION TO THE CITY HE LIVED IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE IS WITHOUT PEER. COLLEGE PARK WAS A MOST IMPORTANT PART OF HIS LIFE AND HE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION FOR MANY YEARS AS A COUNCIL MEMBER AND MAYOR AND CONTINUED AS A PRIVATE CITIZEN AND COMMITTEE MEMBER LONG AFTER HIS TIME IN OFFICE HAD PASSED. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM AND WORKED WITH HIM TO MAKE COLLEGE PARK A UNIQUE COMMUNITY.

I SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER A TRIP HE , AS MAYOR, AND I, A NEW COUNCILMEMBER, TOOK IN 1983, TO SEATTLE FOR A NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES (NLC) CONVENTION WHERE WE DELIVERED A PAPER AND SPEECH ON TOWN/GOWN RELATIONS. DUE TO SOME MIX-UP IN RESERVATIONS, WE ENDED UP SHARING A ROOM FOR FIVE DAYS AND FOR YEARS DEBATED WHO SNORED THE LOUDEST. THAT YEAR WAS AN EXCEPTIONALLY COLD ONE FOR SEATTLE WITH SNOW, 30F DEGREES AND LESS. NONETHELESS, WE MANAGED TO WALK TO THE ORIGINAL REI (LONG BEFORE IT CAME TO COLLEGE PARK) AND ENJOY THE SEATTLE SITES. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, HE AND GAIL AND I WENT TO THE NLC CONVENTION IN SAN ANTONIO, WHERE WE BENEFITED FROM THE SEMINARS AND TOURED AN HISTORIC CITY.

AL’S HISTORY IN COLLEGE PARK, AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS ARE UNIQUE AND ALWAYS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE CITIZENS HE SERVED. HE WILL BE MISSED.

MIKE JACOBS, FORMER MAYOR OF COLLEGE PARK, 1997 – 2001
